Animal Husbandry Days Exhibition and Fair in Hodmezovasarhely 2012

This year the Animal Husbandry Days are a bit later than usual. It is usually held at the end of April, around the day of St George but this year it is a bit later, between 11th and 13th May.
All the seven breeding sectors of animal husbandry are presented in Hodmezovasarhely - horse, cattle, pig, sheep ,goat, poultry and fish. Through the last 19 years it became one of the most important events in agriculture and animal husbandry. The exhibition is a place where representatives of related businesses and companies can present themselves to professionals who are interested in what they can offer but it is also a place where young and old can find something to do as a family programme.

There are various programmes for the whole family from Friday to Sunday although Friday is more for the professionals. On Saturday and Sunday you can see a "spectacular" pig killing, Saturday at 10:30, Sunday at 9:30 and on both days there are different Gidran shows during the days. On Saturday there is a greyhound racing at 10:00. You can visit the fair where you can buy different traditional handmade products and children can try some games too. There are lots of places where you can have lunch or just a snack and a drink but you can also bring your own food and have a picnic on the grass.

Tickets are 1000 Huf for adults, it is free for children under 18. Parking ticket is also 1000 Huf next to the exhibition, parking men will show you the place where to go. If you stay in Hodmezovasarhely and would not like to drive to the exhibition you can get there by bus from Andrassy street or a diesel train from the train station. Buses go every hour from 9:00 until 18:00, trains also go every hour between 8:30 and 17:30.

Christmas greetings from Hodmezovasarhely

Hodmezovasarhely is getting into the spirit of the season.
The streets in the centre and Kossuth square are lit with hundreds of lights. It can be enjoyed by the customers at the Christmas fair and the lots of children and adults who enjoy the ice rink in front of the Town Hall, which is free to use!

Hodstock Festival Hodmezovasarhely

This weekend on 9th and 10th September Hodstock festival will be organised in Hodmezovasarhely, Szechenyi square.
It is the unofficial underground festival in Hungary with more than 26 groups and bands. It is not only a festival where you can listen to underground music it is also a talent show where unknown groups can show their music. It can be very exciting to listen to young musicians and their fresh music.
There will be two tribute concerts, the first on Friday and the second on Saturday.
On Friday you can see Monkey Ranch Foo Fighters Tribute and the other is Motörazor with a Motörhead tribute. Both concerts starts at 7 p.m.
On Friday you can also see Crazy Blues Band, Szabo Eszter and Kontor Tamas, iNSANE, Strategia and Heavy.
Saturday starts with the already mentioned Motörazor concert and after them GrimaszK, FISH!, VL45, Blind Myself and Living Dead Army on the big stage. Starting at 4 p.m. there will be the talent show on the small stage with lots of intriguing bands and music.
There will be a Vatafaka concert and other programmes. Good food, lots of beer come and enjoy a weekend in Hodmezovasarhely!

Programmes for the summer in Hodmezovasarhely

Between the 15th and 17th of July there will be a Harvest Festival in Martely.

Martely is a community only 8 kilometres from Hodmezovasarhely which belongs to Hodmezovasarhely Small Region. Its main attraction is the backwater of the river Tisza. The landscape is wonderful and it attracts many visitors in all seasons. Throughout the year it is a great place for fishermen and anglers because of the river.

Martely also attracts artists, especially painters. During the summer there is a special workshop for them and some of their works are exhibited int he Annual Autumn Exhibition in Hodmezovasarhely in October.

The Harvest Festival will be held in Tiszapart Camping where you will see an exhibition of the local agricutlture in addition to traditional instruments and machines. In the afternoon there will be a procession to the Village Hall with folk dancers, reapers and partner towns representatives. From the Village Hall everyone will go to the corn-field and the reapers start traditional harvest with hand. In the evening there will be a ball with folk dancers and lots of palinka! If you have nowhere to stay you can book an apartment, a wooden hose or you can even try staying in a jurta, a traditional Hungarian tent. You can also stay in

Hodmezovasarhely as there are numerous hotel sin the town and go to Martely by car. If you like cycling there is a very good cycle lane between Hodmezovasarhely and Martely and this way you can drink as much palinka as you want.

The cycle lane continues to Mindszent, a nearby town only 8 kilometres from Martely, and 13 from Hodmezovasarhely where you can go swimming in the river Tisza. The river bank is sandy and the water is clear.

Animal Husbandry and Agricultural Fair in Hodmezovasarhely

One of the most important festivals in the region is the Animal Husbandry and Agricultural Fair in Hodmezovasarhely. This year it is between 6th – 8th May. Usually it is at the last weekend of April, which is the closest to St George’s day buti n 2011 it is Easter so the date was changed. At least we’ll have a bigger chance for warm, sunny weather. It’s not very enjoyable when it’s raining. It will be the eighteenth time this agricultural fair has been organised. In the old time there were exhibitions related only to animals but since 2005 agriculture and cultivation is also significant part of the exhibition. Apart from the six branches of animal husbandry which is present at the fair in Hodmezovasarhely, such as horse, cattle, pig, sheep, goat and poultry you will be able to see related agricultural exhibitions from the top companies.

Organizers in Hodmezovasarhely try to bring the latest methods and developments available in a place where you can see the animals in traditional Hungarian thatched roofed outbuildings. The atmosphere is fantastic and it is the perfect place for not only professional people but also for families with children. There are games and competitions for children, they can stroke animals and see lots of interesting things. There are eateries all around the place where you can also try Hungarian beer and palinka. At the fair you can buy products of craftsmen from the region.  If you come by car you should expect smaller traffic jams ont he way to the fair but policemen will be quiding you to the parking spaces. You can come by bike as there is a bicycle lane leading to the agricultural exhibition but be prepared that it will be very crowded. It is one of the greatest festivals in Hodmezovasarhely and locals always do their best to make it a memorable weekend. Among the programmes there will be different animal judging, greyhound coursing race, parade of different horses, pony paus de deux, sheep clipping competition and many more. Don’t miss this opportunity to come to Hodmezovasarhely and enjoy a day or two close to nature and animals.

Global Volunteers in Hodmezovasarhely

Last Saturday a team of Global Volunteers ( http://globalvolunteers.org/ ) arrived in Hodmezovasarhely and will stay with us until the middle of April.

Global Volunteers

Hodmezovasarhely is the only town in Hungary that invited Global Volunteers. It is an apolitical, nonsecreterian organization doing all sorts of work worldwide. They would go to any place basically but they have to be asked. Our local government asked them to come here and they did. In Hodmezovasarhely they have been teaching English to primary and secondary students for many years. They join English lessons in local schools and encourage students to use the English language. Most students are very happy to realize they can understand native speakers and become more confident. In my opinion their work is very important as students both young and older see what the point is in learning a language.
The volunteers are extremely popular they keep saying they're greeted even in the streets and sometimes invited to homes. They also give free lessons during their stay in Hodmezovasarhely in Nemeth Laszlo Primary and Secondary Grammar School (Hodmezovasarhely, Ormos Ede u. 18). The lessons will be between 4:30 and 6:30 pm on every weekday.

Hodmezovasarhely Kossuth Square

I would like to show you the centre of Hodmezovasarhely the most important square with the help of 360 Cities, an interactive map. You will see the buildings in the square and I give you some information about the buildings. It was taken last year and Kossuth square doesn't show its best face as there are no flowers. It's much nicer when everything is green and blooming. I'll post some photos later.

When you switch on the map the first building to appear is the building of the former National Bank. It was designed by Miksa Muller, an architect from Szeged, and was built in 1906-1907. Its dome is remarkable and on top of that you can see the sculpture of Mercury who was the god of trade in Greek mythology. There are more reference to the function of the building. There are two sculptures, a man and a woman, representing thrift and agriculture on the facade and also a beehive. It is a very fine example of secessionist architecture.
Next to the bank on the right you can find the Gorog palota or Greek Palace. On the ground floor you can find a supermarket and on the first floor there are flats. It is quite an old building but I have no idea why it is called Greek palace.
On the right on the other side of the road the orange and yellow palace is called Lotta palace. Its owner was a woman of Greek origin so it might have something to do with the name of the previous house. Until 1908 it was grey and some locals called it grey palace. After that when it lost its grey colour people started to call it Lotta palace referring to the name of the owner. It was one of the first buildings in the town with more than one floors.
Next to Lotta palace there is a newly built building where you can find OTP, a Hungarian bank and ATMs.
If you look at the map at the background you can see a building with blue tiles on it. That's Sarokhaz, a cafe which is one of the few where you can still smoke. It's strange as it operates as a confectionary as well. You can have alcohol too. When the weather is nice it has an outdoor terrace which is a very good place with children as there's no traffic around and they can run around on the lawn.
Next to Sarokhaz still in the background you can find the Old Reformed Church. Apart from its obvious religious functions it was a place from where people checked the enemy coming, fires and floods. It is built in Baroque style in the 17th-18th century. In 1741-42 a wall ws built around the church which can still be seen. During school students from Bethlen Gabor Reformed Grammar Scool students come to church service On Mondays and Fridays in the morning at 7:30 so it can bee quite crowded then.
In the foreground you can see the statue of Kossuth. He was a well known figure as a freedom fighter and bellwether of democracy in Europe. He was one of the most important figure in the Hungarian revolution and war of independence. Hodmezovasarhely local government  decided to erect the statue in 1894. The finished statue was put on this place on 22nd March 1903 where Kossuth delivered a speech in Hodmezovasarhely while recruiting soldiers for the war. The statue was made by Ede Kallos a famous artist born in Hodmezovasarhely.

Hodmezovasarhely Hungary

Hodmezovasarhely lies in the south-eastern part of Hungary only 25 km away from Szeged. Although it has one of the biggest administrative area the town itself is not very big. As it was and still is an agricultural town you can't find a traditional Old Town with narrow and crooked little streets.

Kossuth square

There are older parts of Hodmezovasarhely where you can see traditional peasant houses along with rich farmers's houses and other old buildings. The centre is not very big but it is filled with beautiful buildings. Kossuth square is the main square in Hodmezovasarhely where you can see the Town Hall, the post office, a bank, Alfoldi Gallery and Fekete Sas or Black Eagle which used to be a hotel but now it functions as a place for balls, conferences and different performances.
This square is the most important meeting point for people and a favourite place to relax. There are always children running around, students relaxing after school and pensioners resting on the benches. Just opposite Kossuth square there is a nice outdoor cafe where you can have a snack, a drink or an ice-cream and watch people go by.
No wonder Hodmezovasarhely is the first slow town in Hungary. It is a place where you can take your time you don't feel the urge to rush into things. Local people like foreigners a lot they are very friendly and helpful even if they have problems with communicating in English. Young people can usually speak foreign languages, especially English or German and are usually willing to do so. There are many hotels and guest houses where tourists can stay during their visit. There's a swimming pool and spa where you can swim or just relax or visit Martely, a nearby village on the River Tisza backwater.On the whole I love living here and I think there's no better place to live.
Hodmezovasarhely is a town where people care about each other and help one other. More and more people realize it that's one of the reasons why people from other countries setle down in the local retirement home. Clean air, friendly people, livable place, what else would you need?
